How to get a job online: millennials networking guide

Millennial networking is getting more popular, with more companies offering online job boards and job search services, but many still struggle to find the right match.

The job boards are popping up everywhere, from LinkedIn to CareerBuilder to CareerSuite.

They’re great, said Amanda LeBlanc, CEO of job search company Thrame.

But they’re a pain.

LeBlanc says it’s not just that you’re looking for someone who has a resume or is well-known online.

You’re also looking for a connection to other employers.

“You want people who you know and you can talk to,” she said.

Thrame’s new website, Millennial Jobs, offers jobs from social media sites like Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn to online job sites like Monster, Monster Job, and Hire Me.

Leblanc said Thrame is seeing more companies embrace online job search and that the online community is growing, but she said some are still struggling.

“There are a lot of people that are looking for jobs that they don’t know anything about, they don (have) no social network or no LinkedIn,” she told CBC News.

“So, that’s why they’re struggling to find people that match.”

Millennials are getting online job searches, but LeBlac said many still find it hard to find a match.

LeBreton said the main problem is people are trying to match job opportunities online.

“People are starting to realize that you can go into any site and type in your name, and they’ll find you,” she added.

“They’ll be able to get you a job, and you know that’s great, but they’re not ready for it to actually work.”

In her research, LeBlan says she found that 70 per cent of the online job seekers interviewed were looking for an online job.

“That’s really surprising,” she says.

“It shows that there are a growing number of millennials that are willing to put themselves out there, put their resume online and start working.”

She said employers are looking at the online jobs and the people who do it.

“In the past, employers were only looking at job seekers that were in their network or a small group, or in a specific city, so they couldn’t find a qualified candidate,” she explained.

“Now that we’ve got the online workforce, employers are seeing that it’s an important part of their job search strategy.”

While job boards like Monster and Monster Job are great, LeBreton says many people struggle to get matched.

“Some people might be on LinkedIn, some might be Facebook, some may be Monster, some could be job search sites like Jobseeker,” she noted.

“We’re seeing that some of the older workers that are on these sites, they’re just trying to find someone to match their search.”

For example, a job seeker might be looking for two different jobs, and one is an online and the other is an offline job.

She might be searching for one job that’s online and another job that is offline.

She says it can be a big hurdle.

“When you’re trying to search online for a job and you have no online presence, it’s like looking for the right shoes online, you can’t find the shoes online,” she stressed.

LeBretton says she sees a lot more employers embracing online job board services.

“I think there’s been a lot less negativity, but we have to remember that this is the internet, it is a new technology, it has a huge opportunity to make a huge difference to the job market,” she stated.

“The problem that we have right now is that the barriers are really low for young people who want to start their careers.”

LeBlanch says that with more people joining online job searching platforms, the number of jobs available to Canadians has increased dramatically.

“As more people are able to access this service, it creates a lot better networking opportunities,” she pointed out.

“And, with the ability to connect with people in the real world, that means you can really find out what’s available and what people are looking to do.”
